Between 1981 and 1984, lead guitarist Azis Mangasi Siagian, bassist Ricky Teddy, keyboardist Ari Suwignyo, drummer Budhy Haryono, twin vocalist Robby Matulessy and Guntur Simbolon, and rhythm guitarist Arnold "Yudi" Suryadinata formed a band called Jam. In January 1984, Guntur decided to leave Jam. Due to the individual members' busy schedules, the band went on hiatus for several months. Still in January 1984, Azis (lead guitar), Ricky (bass), Ari (keyboards), Budhy Haryono (drums), Robby (vocals), and Yudi (rhythm guitar) reactivated the band. Not long after, Azis met music producer Log Zhelebour. Log agreed to manage them on the condition that the name "Jam" be changed, as it was considered too Western-sounding. Log then proposed the name "Jam Rock," since January 19, 1984, reasoning that "rock" (the stone) symbolized hardness. Furthermore, naming bands or vocal groups after types of stone was a popular trend at the time. Azis and the other members agreed to the proposal. However, feeling that the phase of performing Western songs had dragged on for too long, Budhy Haryono and Robby Matulessy chose to resign in 1985. Budhy subsequently formed the band Krakatau, while Robby joined the band Elpamas. Between 1985 and 1995, there were several personnel changes in the band. After vocalist Krisyanto, guitarist Fitrah Alamsyah and drummer Sandy Handoko joined the band, they performed in several rock festivals in Bandung started gaining fame in Indonesian music society. In 1996, they met their future record producer, Log Zhelebour, who offered them contract for recording music album. Then, the band changed their name to Jamrud and released their debut album, Nekad, in 1996. Throughout their career, most of Jamrud's studio albums have been certified platinum in Indonesia.
